Kabiye has recently begun to make an appearance on the internet, with two recent postings by the Jehovah’s Witnesses. A significant moment in Kabiye language development. To my knowledge this is a first, and I’ll be monitoring how it develops. I think the future of many African languages is going to depend on how present they are on the internet. I don’t mean posting linguistic research, though that has its place too. I mean real language use, with languages like Kabiye being used for social networking, blogs, wikis etc. There are now more than 200 Wikipedia articles written in Ewe, the main language of the south of Togo, but none written in Kabiye yet.
