Books
I devour books. I particularly like anglo-indian authors: Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh, Rohinton Mistry. On religion, recent guiding lights have been Thomas Merton, Karen Armstrong and the rule of life of the Jerusalem Community.
Here’s a list of some of my favourite books:
Vikram Seth: The Golden Gate, A Suitable Boy
Amitav Ghosh: The Glass Palace
Mervyn Peake: Titus Groan, Gormenghast
Thomas Merton: The Seven-storey Mountain (version française : La nuit privée d’étoiles)
Karen Armstrong: The Battle for God: Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam
Rumer Godden: In this House of Brede
Primo Levi: The Periodic Table, Other People’s Trades
William Dalrymple : From the Holy Mountain, The Age of Khali
Chaim Potok: In the Beginning, My Name is Asher Lev
Timothy Garton Ash: The File
Amélie Nothomb: Stupeurs et tremblements, Ni d’Eve ni d’Adam
I subscribe to the Guardian Weekly, and read it from cover to cover every week. Trouble is, when I’m in Togo, it often doesn’t come for several weeks at a time, then I get two or three in one day.
Hey this list reminds me how grateful I am to you for introducing me to several of these wonderful authors – Vikram Seth, Mervyn Peake, Thomas Merton, William Dalrymple. I’m trying to recall now which way the introductions went in the case of Chaim Potok and Primo Levi, not that it really matters. I am inspired to search out a couple of these well-loved books for a long overdue re-reading. Thank you for this.
